I bought this book for a gift. When it arrived, I was just going to flip through it, but I found myself completely immersed in it. Thank you for sharing your story, Ruby. You truly were an amazing little girl.

I purchased this as a Christmas gift for my great granddaughter, Sunny. She is only seven, but is a good reader. I will introduce her to Ruby by telling her the book is a story of a girl, Ruby, even younger than she, but who had to be brave in ways Sunny is unlikely to know. I will explain before we even begin to read how Ruby was in such a dangerous situation she needed police to guard her. Imagine how brave she had to be. No one, NO ONE had ever done such a dangerous thing. We will read the book together just four or five pages at a time, so we have much to talk about after. The local libraries have multiple historical films to add to the wonderful photos in this book. Would I buy this book for any other reader under 12? Probably not. For Sunny and me it will be a time of reading the story of a terrible chapter in Americas history. I would never just hand Sunny this book and leave her to figure it out for herself. This is a book we will share on many levels. Im not sure this is a good review for you. Clearly I am a biased reader. I have a plan to share this with Sunny, but I may be completely wrong in my planning. Im taking my chances. if I am wrong, Ill wait a couple of years and try again.
