Even as one of the creators fell back on his department store experience, so can I testify that these truths applied to my work in Mens Sportswear at Richs Department Store (now defunct) (A Southern Institution Since 1867) in Atlanta. We gents sold sports coats and trousers, and the corseted quibbling mature ladies across the aisle sold shirts, shorts, etc. Next to them was Underwear; next to that was Dress Shirts, Ties, Accessories. Suits were upstairs. We had our share of characters: Jack, the former sailor, who one day took a very long lunch to rendezvous with a young woman hed met the night before---unbeknownst to his wife. There was the gay Fashion Expert, former New Yorker with heavily-dyed and lacquered hair, and an attitude. Also the heavy black man Christmas help, who assured every customer that their big purchase wont increase your payment. Harry the Hustler who waited on several men at once. Our buyer didnt care; Harry always led the department in sales. Then there was Don who had a steel plate in his head, and occasionally his attention and focus wandered. Always a couple of retired military. Assistant Buyers came and went, always on the make to move up the corporate ladder. John was one. On a slow night when there were few customers, he said Refold those pants. We just did, an hour ago. Well, refold them again. Any employee who had been there 25 years had a one on one relaxed interview with the Founder---not at all like Young Mr. Grace.
