The stakes are metal and screw together fine. The gnome is as it appears in the magazine and definitely seems to fit Christmas/Holiday season more than year-round, which is why I got them. The only problem is that unless its a very sunny day, the lights do not last very long at all once it gets dark. I wish it had the ability to be converted to standard batteries for the darker holiday/winter season or some similar solution.
